First Use:

Before running your compressor make sure you read and understand the instruction manual. Many compressors have a break-in procedure that must be followed before using the machine for the first time. Failure to follow the pre-startup instructions may lead to premature failure and a costly repair bill.

The owner’s manual also contains air compressor maintenance and safety procedures that must be followed to avoid personal or third party injuries.

Before doing any maintenance or adjustments to your air compressor make sure the compressor is switched off, unplugged from the mains and the tank drain valve is in the open position.

Opening the tank drain valve:

When the tank drain valve is opened compressed air and water will be released directly towards the floor, so make sure there is no dust or debris on the floor that can be blown around. Also make sure that the floor is not of a type that will be damaged by water. Wearing eye and hearing protection is recommended before opening the valve.

Maintenance:

Refer to the owner’s manual for information about how frequently you should change the oil and air filter. Please note that only specialized compressor oil should be used. Clean the air filter on a regular basis. A clogged air filter can lead to poor compressor performance and eventually engine damage.

Hoses:

Check hoses for signs of wear, cuts and abrasions. Hoses should be hung up when not in use to avoid being a trip hazard and also prevent accidental damage to the hose. All hoses and fittings should have a psi rating at least equal to or greater than the maximum pressure of the air compressor.

Wear safety glasses, goggles or a visor. Compressed air can turn small objects into air bound missiles that can easily blind. Hearing protection should be worn if the compressor has a rating of over 80db or if the compressor is used in a confined area.

Wear gloves to avoid cuts and burns. The discharge tube on a compressor tends to get very hot and accidentally touching the tube with an un-gloved hand can result in a nasty burn.

Electrical:

Make sure that the mains supply to which the appliance is connected complies with current safety regulations and is correctly earthed. Using a longer extension cord than recommended can result in a loss of power, and can cause damage to the compressors electrical circuit and/or motor.

  • Never use compressed air to blow dust off yourself or dry your clothing.
  • Keep animals and children well away from the work area.
  • Never operate the compressor outside when it is raining or snowing.
  • If you hear any unusual noises or vibration, stop the compressor, unplug it, drain the tank and check for any loose fittings, nuts or bolts.
  • Gasoline powered compressors should only be run indoors if the area is very well ventilated.
  • Check the air pressure safety release valve on a regular basis. This valve should not be tampered with in any way.
  • Never adjust the factory set pressures on the compressor.
  • Always use the compressor on a flat stable surface.
  • Lower the PSI when using compressed air to clean off equipment or working areas. This will lessen the likelihood of injury from flying debris.
